was Yellowface a prophecy? a brief history of literary asian-fishing
is R.F. Kuang a prophet? or is impersonating Asian people just a time-honored literary tradition?

    I just discovered your channel from your Instagram and I just want to say I really love your content! It's shocking how easy it is for white people to pretend to be from another culture/ethnicity just to get the "benefits" that are there to try to even out the playing field... I only hope that these examples will discourage people who have thought about doing this

    Not surprising, but this is not unique to literature. Look no further than the orientalism of classical music, or more egregiously, the case of Larry Clark. Larry Clark masquerading as an Asian woman, Keiko Yamada , in order to get more attention is quite disgusting and disappointing.

    Men write romance novels under a female pen name, women have written genre fiction in the past under male names. Shouldn't a work stand on its own merits, do we have to do virtue signaling in every aspect of life? If a work is good then judge it on its own merits regardless of who wrote the book.

    • @WalkingSideways
      @WalkingSideways День назад

      That's not the issue though. She pretended to be something she's not, and tried to use that identity to gain influence and a step up on her career as a writer. If she was honest about her identity writing Asian characters this wouldn't be much of an issue.

    • @danaslitlist1

      Go back and listen Cat talk about the story of “Yi-Fen Chou” and you’ll get your answer. Asian and other authors of color are actively denied opportunities and white people masquerading as a race they are not and taking the rare opportunities away from ACTUAL people of that demographic is gross.

    • @Rachopin77
      @Rachopin77 День назад

      The issue is that she thinks that there are extra “perks” that you get as an Asian writer or having an Asian identity, and is basically doing all kinds of stereotypes and trying to trick people into caring about her book or seeing her as safe rather than letting her work speak for itself, which it didn’t.. Writing under a pen name isn’t the same as pretending to be a different person or race entirely and wanting to get the specific social capital that someone thinks comes along with being Asian conveniently. I’m black but have a name that doesn’t give many clues to what my ethnicity is. If I used a pen name that was a similarly neutral name, I would still be a black author and wouldn’t be pretending to be white. Also, I’m pretty sure pen names are just on the front end but publishers etc literally know what your real name is because you’re still yourself doing business, just using a pen name. I know a few authors real names because I am an illustrator and work in publishing often. Just not the same thing in my opinion. It’s not about virtue signaling, it’s wack and weird in my opinion.

    • @mtngrl5859
      @mtngrl5859 День назад

      @@Rachopin77 If someone writes under a pen name, they indeed are pretending to be someone who they aren't. So, if a man or group of men write a romance novel under a female name, they are benefitting (book selling) since most women reading in the romance genre prefer the female gaze. In years past, if a woman wrote in certain genres (espionage, murder/crime) she had an easier time in getting published and consumers buying their books with a certain name. In terms of "social capital" if people just focused on the quality of the book, then it wouldn't matter regarding ethnicity, gender, or any imaginary social construct. I've heard some criticism of this book based on the quality of the book which should be the only metric.

    Psalmanazar really cosplayed a fantasy version of another race huh. The first time I learned about racefaking may have been the Marvel author who used a Japanese penname and talked about being Japanese in interviews. He used a penname coz he wasn't allowed to write as an editor, but that didn't explain why he needed to be Japanese. He ended up working on Japanese characters' stories, so he ended up taking space that could have gone to an actual Japanese writer. Anyway, nice to learn some historical examples.

    thank you for such an interesting and well researched video!! i find it interesting that this phenomenon isn't limited to just the literary world either. just this week, it was revealed that a semi popular video game leaker was a white man pretending to be a japanese woman named midori (he even posted in broken english to make himself seem more... authentic). he defended himself by claiming, "The Midori persona as it is may not be a real person, but it is what I believe to be an accurate representation of a real person albeit in a particularly strange way that I wish I did not use. But it was never used to manipulate anyone or to appear more credible." where do these people get the audacity?!?!?!

    The reason why Zutara is beloved and feels right(the ship this book is based off of) is that Zuko is knocked down from his postion of power when they become close, he whole heartedly regrets his prejudice and Katara doesn't forgive easily. They become friends very late only after all stuff is sorted, they dont ignore the elephant in the room and they discuss it. He is a redeemed villain who wants to right his wrongs. Not a straight up villain long before he and katara are even okay enough to be in the same room together

    I really like your analyses, it's just not a good book. Usually in fantasy, especially in fantasy with opresive govermental structures we're used to headstrong characters who rebel and are willing to die for the cause, or if you want to go the morally grey route, strong characters with clear desires. Ruying is simply neither of those, instead she's a super naive 19 year old who looks for short term survival and falls for the first guy that doesn't tell her her powers are kinda cool actually. If one thing, I do think she is written consitantly. The problem with a character like that is that it isn't the most interesting to read about, nor do we understand her struggles all that much because every reader (and even every other character on page) has already come to the logical conclusion: This occupation is bad. I didn't see any of the marketing before I started reading that book. And without that context I did think I was kind of getting what Molly X Chang was trying to do here. The central theme of "Heroes die, cowards live" is a good one which makes an awesome opportunity for a complex character that has a massive arc of coming into her own power. This could've been a very good and book without minimal changes to the actual plot If Molly just went for it. The pacing just throws it wayyy off. I think the entire book could've been fixed by showing us different scenes from the same story that have a bigger emotional impact. The part before she gets kindnapped needs to be way shorter, than the time skip needs to be fully fleshed out because that's when most of the plot actually happens. See Anthony's manipulation and Ruying's slow decent. Have her fall in love and slowly fall hard for his lies (and don't market it as a romance, make it clear that this is an abusive power imbalance). The last bit of the book where she "discovers" (she should've known) the thruth should've been there way earlier and then flesh out more moral dillema of not being able to leave this situation. Book two can than be about bringen the occupation down from the inside out. As it stands, Ruying is a very shallow character. During an active occupation not everyone can be a hero, some are just trying to survive. This is a strong theme in the book but I do think it was handled very poorly because Ruying remains so passive either way. The author didn't manage to sell the part where Ruying was doing it for survival well enough and that made the entire book fall flat. I think Molly X Chang was indeed afraid of making her too unlikable. But showing characters making big mistakes in the name of survival is a good set up for a redemption arc. During an active occupation not everyone can be a hero, some are just trying to survive. This is a strong theme in the book but I do think it was handled very poorly because Ruying remains so passive either way. The author didn't manage to sell the part where Ruying was doing it for survival well enough and that made the entire book fall flat.During an active occupation not everyone can be a hero, some are just trying to survive. In my opinion, its the writer's responsibility to research on serious topics such as colonialism if they intend to input it in their novels. Personal family history doesnt suffice compared to the greater narrative that are in our history books. Which is why I always applaud RF Kuang and the way she handled social issues in her books, because you can tell how much research she probably had done just to input such heavy social commentaries in her books.
